An interview with Head Coach, Josh Stapley

Head Coach Josh Stapley

Head Coach of Waves’ Squad Swimming, Josh Stapley’s mantra is - ‘I don’t coach swimming, I coach people.’

“I love seeing young people develop,” said Josh, “and the lessons they learn in swimming will benefit them later in life.”

As Head Coach of Squad Swimming at Waves Josh will oversee various levels of competitive and fitness swimming.

“Taking the role as Head Coach with Waves is a move I couldn’t pass up,” said Josh. “It’s one of the best aquatic facilities in the state and will help me develop as a coach and allow me to inspire more people to enjoy swimming and become great athletes.”

Waves offers several levels of squad training including transition from learn to swim, Bronze, Silver and Gold ‘competitive’ levels and a Bronze and Silver ‘Fitness’ category that also includes a triathlon stream for juniors and adults.

Josh has a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at Charles Stuart University and began coaching in his hometown of Bathurst. He has also participated in triathlons for the past 10 years and had a short spell as a professional triathlete.

“When I was a junior elite athlete growing up in Bathurst, I had limited access to services that helped me develop,” said Josh, “I’m keen to make sure junior elite athletes who come to Waves can access all those resources, and high-level coaching is part of that.”

“As a coach, I’m looking forward to helping elite athletes reach their potential, but also encouraging participation in swimming for the whole Hills Shire community,” he added.
